Fire Rips Through Historic Red Barn in Brookhaven PDF Print E-mail

Wednesday, 20 January 2010 21:09

A fire ripped through and destroyed a century-old historic barn located at 311 Beaver Dam Road in Brookhaven. The Brookhaven Fire Department received a call for a reported structure fire around 9:09 pm.

The department was on their way back to the firehouse from a call when the alarm was toned out.

Upon arrival they found a fully involved structure fire and called for mutual aid. The fire burned for almost two hours as fire departments from Brookhaven, Bellport, Hagerman and Mastic battled the blaze. The South Country Ambulance service also responded to the seen.

The fire completely destroyed the barn and threatened a nearby house located less than 20 feet from the main body of fire. There was no reported damage to the house although at one point during the operation the cedar shingles did begin to steam.

South Country Ambulance transported two firefighters with non life-treating injures to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital.

The Fire is under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad and the Brookhaven Town Fire Marshals Office. There's no word on how the fire started.

Ice Water Rescue Drill Huge Success PDF Print E-mail

On a frigid morning on the tenth of January, the Brookhaven Fire Department held an intense ice rescue drill at Squassux Landing in the Hamlet.  Lucky for all, the canals were frozen over and gave us an opportune time to train in difficult conditions.  Multiple evolutions were done to simulate victim removal on surface ice and also submersion senarios.  Using diverse techniques and tools, all victims were rescued successfully.  Job well done by all in frigid conditions!
