Take a Moment to Dig Out Your Fire Hydrant PDF Print E-mail
Written by Webmaster
Saturday, 13 February 2010 09:40

As Long Island digs themselves out from 10+ inches of snow, the Brookhaven Fire Department are asking everyone to take an extra moment to dig out any fire hydrants near your home or business.

Hydrants not only get covered by falling snow, but with the snow from plows and the shoveling of sidewalks. If firefighters have to clear snow from around a hydrant in the event of a fire, it could cost valuable time.

Fire hydrants should be cleared out at least three feet on all sides of the hydrant. This will leave plenty of room for firefighters to access all parts of the fire hydrant when connecting hoses during a fire. The few moments you spend clearing out a fire hydrant will be of great benefit to the community in the event of an emergency.

Thanks to all and have a safe weekend from the Brookhaven Fire Department!

On February 6, 2010 the Brookhaven Fire Department held their annual Installation Dinner at Majestic Gardens in Rocky Point.  It was a wonderful evening with much to celebrate.  Multiple members were awarded with the 50% Award and the Midnight/Daytime Alarm Award.

Recipients of the 50% Award were: Lieutenant Giuseppe Loiacono, Rich Palmer, Jerry Vitale, John Komosinski, and Chief Peter DiPinto Jr.  Recipients of the Midnight/Daytime Alarm Award were: Lieutenant Giuseppe Loiacono, Rich Palmer, Jerry Vitale, John Komosinski, Anthony Verni, and Chief Peter DiPinto Jr.

Ex-Chief and current Commissioner John Strickland was recognized with the 50 Year Membership Award.  Mr. Stickland's dedication and service to the Brookhaven Fire Department is very much appreciated by not only the members of the Brookhaven Fire Department, but also the entire community.

The Lincoln Quappe Rookie of the Year Award went to Matthew Petheram.  Matthew showed tremendous dedication during his first year in the department.  He will surely be an asset to the department in future years.

The climax of the evening was undoubtedly the installation of our new chiefs and officers.  Newly installed officers are as followed: Captain of Fire Police Clark Champney, Station One Lieutenant Giuseppe Loiacono, Headquarters Lieutenant James Leskowicz, Captain Thomas Connors, 2nd Assistant Chief Bruce Mazza and Chief Peter DiPinto Jr.

Emcee and Commissioner Michael Verni did a wonderful job hosting the evening.  One of the more touching moments during the dinner was the installation of newly elected Chief Peter DiPinto Jr.  His father, Peter DiPinto Sr. installed his son during the ceremony.  It was a very proud and joyus evening for the DiPinto family.

Fire Rips Through Historic Red Barn in Brookhaven PDF Print E-mail

Wednesday, 20 January 2010 21:09

A fire ripped through and destroyed a century-old historic barn located at 311 Beaver Dam Road in Brookhaven. The Brookhaven Fire Department received a call for a reported structure fire around 9:09 pm.

The department was on their way back to the firehouse from a call when the alarm was toned out.

Upon arrival they found a fully involved structure fire and called for mutual aid. The fire burned for almost two hours as fire departments from Brookhaven, Bellport, Hagerman and Mastic battled the blaze. The South Country Ambulance service also responded to the seen.

The fire completely destroyed the barn and threatened a nearby house located less than 20 feet from the main body of fire. There was no reported damage to the house although at one point during the operation the cedar shingles did begin to steam.

South Country Ambulance transported two firefighters with non life-treating injures to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital.

The Fire is under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad and the Brookhaven Town Fire Marshals Office. There's no word on how the fire started.
